Summary

From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in a richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made—whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution。

Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse as well as Game of Thrones and Westworld

After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will。

Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier。

Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy。 But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla。

Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war。

This was just evil lol。 Brilliant, but evil。 Tho the slow burn was real, I really liked that the author was realistic。 There was no way that one person that has been through hell and back was able to forgive everything that has been drilled in her mind and soul just because she has fallen in love。 I really loved how she described both character's inner conflict and their character development。 I also loved the almost nothing was predictable。 Yes, there were things that I saw them coming but most of them had me gapping and gasping and making my heart wanting to leave my chest。 {😓} one thing that I wasn’t too happy about was that it took me about 100 pages in order for me to be fully captivated with the plot and the book’s world。 Second thing was that I knew I had to dislike the villains, but it was as if they were telling me to hate him because of what he did and was planning。 I wanted to know more about both of them。 Especially the main villain。 I wanted to hate him for what I “saw” and not for what o was “told” I don't know if I’m explaining myself correctly lol。 3rd thing I wasn’t very happy about was that the very moment I was waiting for was rushed。 300 pages and IT WAS RUSHED! {📜 } having said that I absolutely recommend this book。 Can’t wait to get my hands on Iron Heart (sequel) and devour it。  。。。more

This book is hard to rate, since I did really enjoy reading it, and I think I will read the sequel, but it wasn’t good enough to be a favorite by any means。 The two main characters, Crier and Aela, are both completely fine。 I was much more interested in Aela, but Crier’s storyline was good too。 But I never got very attached to either one, so even their lesbian romance wasn’t very exciting。 I was much more invested in seeing how the plot turned out, and when the mad queen and Storm were introduce This book is hard to rate, since I did really enjoy reading it, and I think I will read the sequel, but it wasn’t good enough to be a favorite by any means。 The two main characters, Crier and Aela, are both completely fine。 I was much more interested in Aela, but Crier’s storyline was good too。 But I never got very attached to either one, so even their lesbian romance wasn’t very exciting。 I was much more invested in seeing how the plot turned out, and when the mad queen and Storm were introduced, I thought everything was about to get crazy, but it never did。 This book was definitely a set up for much more action in book 2。 But even so I was intrigued by the different political maneuverings and mysteries, and I was certainly surprised by a few reveals。Overall, I already don’t enjoy sci-fi as much as fantasy, and even with a lesbian romance, Crier’s War didn’t have me hooked enough for more than 3 stars。 。。。more

Criers WarThis is a good read for anyone who enjoys great character and world building。 It’s a fantasy story about humans overcoming their oppressors, the made Automae。 It is also wrapped in all that comes with war: loss, grief, anger, brutality, vengeance as well as kindness, compassion, love and humanity。 My favorite quote in the book “Humanity is how you act my lady,” said Jezen “Not how you are made。”

3。5/5 maybe?PROS:The writing style was very easy to get into。 It flowed nicely and wasn't too flowery (although it seemed rather serious and lacked humour) I liked the romance between Ayla and Crier。 While it wasn't entirely a slow burn, it was a true enemies to lovers (back to sort of enemies)。 The moments of passion between them were tense and it was great。 The author did a great job of addressing power dynamics and privilege (specifically looking at the oppressed becoming the oppressors)。 Whi 3。5/5 maybe?PROS:The writing style was very easy to get into。 It flowed nicely and wasn't too flowery (although it seemed rather serious and lacked humour) I liked the romance between Ayla and Crier。 While it wasn't entirely a slow burn, it was a true enemies to lovers (back to sort of enemies)。 The moments of passion between them were tense and it was great。 The author did a great job of addressing power dynamics and privilege (specifically looking at the oppressed becoming the oppressors)。 While Crier was not my favourite character I very much admired her determination to voice her own beliefs in politics despite her controlling father。 I hope this is something that is explored more in the second book。CONS:The start of "Crier's War" was saturated with info dumping as opposed to having things revealed gradually。 This made the pacing very jarring and siffting through the information was much more difficult by the half way point。 While the flashbacks were relevantly placed they weren't all smoothly incorporated into the text and I was almost thrown off by the sudden change in timeline。 (This did get better over the course of the book though) The world building was very well done however character development and relationships weren't all there。 At times Crier was far too naive and trustworthy for a character I thought was meant to be the complete opposite。 I was supposed to be invested in her character the most (she is the lead after all), yet I found myself more interested in the side characters。 As much I enjoyed the romance between Ayla and Crier I didn't think it was established enough for me to be fully invested。 I saw many of the plot twists coming (granted this is more my own fault for being so skeptical and questioning of everything) Overall, I think this was a very good debut with intricate worldbuilding and an interesting plot。 I enjoyed "Crier's War" enough for me to be invested in the second part of this duology and I can't wait to see how everything plays out。 。。。more

Neat worldbuildingI really liked this book。 I thought the concept was pretty original which can be hard to find in sci fi/fantasy。 One gripe I have is how much of a cliffhanger the book ends in that’s kinda a pet peeve of mine。 I think the only thing lacking in this book was interaction between the two MCs。 Felt a little too much like insta love even though it took a long time to happen because they really barely spoke in the novel。 Could’ve benefitted from more relationship development I think。

So I didn’t love this book as much as I thought I would。 Or perhaps I just read it at a bad time。 Either way it didn’t completely live up to the hype。 In saying that, I still did enjoy reading it。 I thought the characters were likeable enough but not loveable (none of them captured my heart really) and the main relationships was very cute from the few romantic moments we got (although the development of it was a bit meh)。 Not really as much enemies to lovers as people make it out to be but that So I didn’t love this book as much as I thought I would。 Or perhaps I just read it at a bad time。 Either way it didn’t completely live up to the hype。 In saying that, I still did enjoy reading it。 I thought the characters were likeable enough but not loveable (none of them captured my heart really) and the main relationships was very cute from the few romantic moments we got (although the development of it was a bit meh)。 Not really as much enemies to lovers as people make it out to be but that didn’t bother me much。 It wasn’t a bad book and I give it 4 stars wholeheartedly, I maybe just expected a bit more from it which I guess is on me。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I had a very hard time getting into this book。 A lot of things in this book are very lucky or not thought out at all。 For example, the book opens with Crier being engaged to Kinok, but what does marriage mean for her kind? They don't seem to understand what sex or romance are, so are they just gonna start living together? Like a designated plus one? And a lot of things in this book happen too conveniently。 Automa are supposed to be able to hear a deer's heart beating, but there are multiple time I had a very hard time getting into this book。 A lot of things in this book are very lucky or not thought out at all。 For example, the book opens with Crier being engaged to Kinok, but what does marriage mean for her kind? One thing to mention is that this book read more as a fantasy than a sci-fi。 However, I didn’t mind it。 The world building was great and I’m excited to see how the concept of humanity is further touched on in the second book。 It’s also an enemies to lovers but it made me so happy because it’s a sapphic enemies to lovers。

I love this book soooo much! I actually read this in a day (which I haven't done in forever) because I couldn't put it down。After seeing some reviews I had quite high expectations for this, and to my surprise it didn't let me down。 Over the past years I've read some fantasy books with a sapphic romance in it and while I enjoyed them, there was always something missing for me。 It's very rare for me to love a relationship in a book as much as movie/tv show relationships, but Ayla & Crier gave me a I love this book soooo much! ay- criers war。i LOVED the idea of this book。 at first glance it seemed similar to that if breaking legacies。 it was not。 the book is SO plot centered and since i was here for the gays and only gays and literally could not care less about the fantasy element, i was bored for a lot of it。 (btw i’m gonna be mentioning breaking legacies a lot in this review so, you know go read it !!) This book was so hyped up and I was so excited to read it, unfortunately it fell through! It’s not a bad book, but it isn’t exceptional either! It’s good, the story is interesting and so are the characters, but I found the world building poor。 I’m probably going to read the sequel but I know I won’t read it again in the future!
